Platinum vs White Gold?

Seems like lately this is the question I have been getting a lot from my customers.  There are benefits to both, depending mainly on personal preference and how deep one's wallet is.  The main thing to consider is the difference in price.  Platinum is more than double the cost of white gold.  Platinum is 92% pure while 18 kt white gold is 75% pure and 14 kt is 58.5% pure.

Also, white gold is not actually "white" gold.  It is actually yellow gold that has been mixed with other alloys like nickel that give it the "white" look.  Overtime with wear and tear, a yellow tinge will start to appear but the metal can easily look new again once it has been dipped in rhodium.  This is not a terribly expensive process, especially when you have a trusted jeweler that you work with.  The benefit of white gold is that it can be high polished to look new again, say bye bye to all those scratches etc!

Platinum overtime takes on a "patina" finish.  Platinum does not polish to a bright white finish like white gold.  With that said, platinum is a more pure metal and is more durable than white gold.

So what does all this mean?  Consider the piece of jewelry that you are debating the metal of.  Typically right-hand rings are done in white gold.  The cost of platinum would skyrocket the price of the ring that almost no one would have a beautiful right-hand ring!  A ring that would be worn everyday, like your engagement ring makes sense to be in platinum, but definitely is not necessary.
